Life-Modifying Tips from Scott Adams

"How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big" is a part autobiography, part motivational memoir, part self-help guide, by the cartoonist behind "Dilbert", a small town guy who made it big time, Scott Adams.

I listened to the Audible version, which had very good pacing, though I did skip some of the parts where Adams goes into diet and exercise tips. (Not to say that they were bad or out of place, I just knew I would not get much out of it. Though, he wrote the book for a lot of different kinds of people, so, if you need a simple view on those subjects, he approaches with humble and likeable prose.)

There are multiple big ideas in this book. Adams' talks about the concepts of energy, the power of self-affirmation, the strategy of association, voice control, the powers of persuasion, etc. All of these tips are grounded in his personal experiences.

Most of them focus on personal, lifestyle changes as opposed to the more organizational lessons of the ENT3003 class. But there is still some links to be drawn between the two, specifically relating to social capital and your entrepreneurship story. I do not think most of Adams' tips should be incorporated into the ENT3003 syllabus, since, by his own admission, they are not academic. Although helping students be more persuasive is always good, and perhaps the syllabus could be valuable.

But the biggest 'a-ha!' moment for me from this book was the importance of story-telling and how it can be a learned skill. I should definitely invest into being able to weave a good yarn,

And I also feel like I should read some Dilbert, now!
